Where is Dettifoss Waterfall Located?

Dettifoss is situated in North Iceland, within the thrilling landscapes of the legendary Vatnajökull National Park, one of Europe's largest national parks. The waterfall is fed by the powerful Jökulsá á Fjöllum River, which flows from the mighty Vatnajökull glacier, providing Dettifoss with immense power and volume.

The waterfall can be found in the northeast region of Iceland, near the towns of Ásbyrgi and Húsavík.

How to Get to Dettifoss

This is one waterfall that is easily accessible by rental car. Dettifoss is located about 37 miles (60km) from Húsavík, or if you’re traveling from Reykjavík, it’s 320 miles (520 km). 

When starting out from Húsavík, head south on Route 85, before turning right onto Route 864 after about 10 miles (20km). This will take you to the parking area for Dettifoss, and the journey should take you about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

If you’re heading to Dettifoss from Reykjavík, begin your journey by setting out north on Route 1 (the Ring Road). After about 230 miles (370 km), turn onto Route 85 towards Húsavík. From there, follow the same directions as above to reach Route 864. Allow 7-8 hours for this journey, but it’s always worth allowing more time to stop and explore the many sights along the way.

Do I Need a 4x4 to Get to Dettifoss?

While it’s possible to visit Dettifoss in a 2WD vehicle during the summer, it might be worth opting for a 4x4 to be safe. Some routes will take you over gravel roads, which can be challenging. For winter travel, we definitely recommend that you hire a 4x4. All routes can be snowy or icy, making a 4x4 essential for both safety and comfort. Autumn (September - October)

  • Accessibility: Routes remain open, but conditions can vary depending on the weather. A 4x4 is recommended at this time. 
  • Weather: The days begin to get shorter and temperatures drop, but there’s still plenty of daylight hours to explore. Crowds will be smaller, but you may encounter some rain.
  • Experience: This is a brilliant time to visit if you’re looking to avoid crowds but still enjoy decent weather. Autumn colors will also be on display.

Winter (November - March)

  • Accessibility: During the winter, routes can be icy, making 4x4 rentals essential. Some paths to the waterfall may be closed due to snow or ice, so being flexible is key. 
  • Weather: Expect shorter days, colder temperatures, and icy conditions, but the views can be completely breathtaking. 
  • Experience: The winter months bring a unique experience at Dettifoss, with dramatic landscapes and the possibility of glimpsing the Northern Lights. But be prepared for harsher weather and potential disruptions. 

Spring (April - May)

  • Accessibility: In early spring, some routes may still have lingering snow and ice, so a 4x4 is still recommended at this time. As the weather heats up, roads become easier to traverse, but conditions can still be unpredictable. 
  • Weather: Adding to the unpredictability is Iceland’s weather in spring. Conditions can be highly changeable, so plan for rain, sun, and even a sprinkling of snow. 
  • Experience: As snows begin to melt, the waterfall tumbles at full force, making this a thrilling time to visit. The landscapes begin to come back to life, and crowds will still be minimal, especially earlier in the season. 

What to Expect at Dettifoss

Size: At 144ft (44 meters) tall and spanning a whopping 328ft (100 meters) across, Dettifoss makes for an immense sight. The power is also incredible, with around 68,000 gallons (193 cubic meters) per second of water thundering over the edge. 

Viewing Areas: There are two main viewing areas, one on the East Bank (along Route 864) and one on the West Bank (Route 862) The East Bank offers a more dramatic view that’s more up close, but the ground can be slippery and uneven, making it difficult for some visitors or small children. The West Bank is more accessible, with better paths and a great view, though from a distance.
