There are many ways to get from the airport to the city, depending on how much luggage you have, how much flexibility you need, and how much you are willing to pay. Iceland’s main airport, Keflavík International Airport (KEF), isn’t located within the city of Reykjavík itself. So, you’ll need to do some planning in terms of getting from point A to B!

No matter what, we advise you to read and make an informed choice, rather than just walking out to grab a taxi. If that’s what you eventually want, then go for it, but the price tag can stun a lot of people on the day. Here, we’ll talk you through the different options for getting from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík, and answer some common questions on the matter.

FAQ: Transport from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík

We advise anyone to have a plan in place once they arrive at KEF airport. Most people head directly to Reykjavík upon arriving in Iceland, so choosing a method of transport is key. Here, we’ll walk you through some common questions and your options for getting to the capital from KEF.

How Far is KEF from Reykjavík, and How Do You Get There?

Can You Get a Taxi to Reykjavík From KEF?

In our guide to Iceland taxis, we list two major companies, BSR and Hreyfill. Both also offer shuttles for fixed rates.

There are taxis available at the front of the airport, which provide plenty of flexibility, but they can be surprisingly costly. This is not due to them ripping you off, but simply because taxis are quite expensive in Iceland. To give you a rough idea, taxi fares from KEF to Reykjavík city center typically cost between 13,500 ISK and 20,000+ ISK ($111 -$164 USD).*

Are Taxi Tours an Option?

Most companies that offer tours around Iceland also offer Airport shuttles. If you’re already signed on with a company to be driven around to take in the sights, check whether they will offer a shuttle and whether they might discount the cost of it.

Can You Get Private Transfers from KEF to Reykjavík?

If you're considering a private transfer but don't plan to use a single company for your entire stay, it can be pricey for solo travelers. However, the cost becomes much more affordable when traveling with others. You can also book a minibus if your group is up to 8 people, and it becomes cheaper than paying for a bus transfer.

Are There Buses from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík?

There are a few buses and bus companies that go from the airport to Reykjavík.

The public no.55 bus does the journey, but it is rather infrequent and uncomfortable.

The Flybus provides a 45-minute transfer, stopping once at Hotel Viking in Hafnarfjörður and Aktu Taktu in Garðabær before stopping at the BSI bus terminal.

Keep in mind that some hotels are in the no bus zone, so you may be dropped off at the nearest bus stop instead. However, Flybus is one of the cheapest options. The Flybus schedule adapts based on arriving flights (and possible delays), so there is a bus available outside the airport around 35-40 minutes after every flight lands. There is also no luggage restriction (for regular-sized luggage), and one ticket is valid on any of the buses, even if you happen to miss the first one. You can expect to pay in the region of 3,899 ISK ($32 USD) for a one-way standard bus ticket, or 4,999 ISK ($41 USD) for Flybus+, which includes a transfer from BSI to your hotel.

Airport Direct is another shuttle bus, though they use minibuses and can drop you off directly at your hotel, rather than going to the bus terminal. This means that they theoretically take less time (though it depends on where your hotel is situated), but they are also more expensive. Pre-booking is always advised and sometimes required, so it’s best to check the website to do some research before traveling.

Are There Luggage Restrictions on Shuttle Buses?

Most shuttle services allow one standard-sized suitcase and one carry-on per passenger. Additional luggage may incur extra fees. It’s worth checking with your specific provider beforehand to be sure.

Can You Get a Rental Car at KEF?

Yes. A rental car offers the greatest flexibility of travel for decent prices. Most of the major rental car agencies offer cars at the lots near the airport, making it easier to get into town or start your trip outside of Reykjavík right away. It is often the same price no matter where you pick up the car. The airport offers a free shuttle from the terminals to the rental car lots, so you don’t have to worry.

If you are trying to get to the shuttle, exit the customs area, continue straight ahead outside the airport, then follow the covered footpath. At the end, you should find the shuttle service.

If you are trying to get to our car rental offices at Keflavík Airport, get on the yellow shuttle bus and get off at the 3rd stop to pick up your car. Always book your rental car ahead with us for peace of mind.
