Road Tolls & Parking in Iceland
Tunnel and bridge tolls, airport and city parking, and national park fees are paid directly to each operator and are not included in your rental. Here is where to pay, how much, and by when.
Before you pay
Pay with your licence plate
Always pay with your rental car's licence plate number, not your booking number. Take a photo of the plate when you collect the car and check it before you confirm any payment.
Tolls are not included
The kilometer road tax is charged as a fixed daily rate and shown in your booking summary. It does not cover tunnel or bridge tolls, parking or attraction fees, and no insurance package covers them either. Read how the road tax works.
Pay each operator directly
There is no single payment that covers every toll and car park. Check the operator and the sign at each location, and pay by the deadline shown there. The Hvalfjörður tunnel north of Reykjavík is free.

Þingvellir National Park
Parking at Þingvellir is camera-controlled. One payment covers the park's P1 (Hakið, by the visitor centre), P2 (Efri-Vellir) and P5 (Valhöll, by the church and Silfra) car parks for the rest of the day.

Landmannalaugar parking reservations
From 20 June to 13 September 2026, you must book a parking space before you drive to Landmannalaugar if you arrive between 09:00 and 16:00. Outside those hours no booking is needed, but the parking fee still applies.
Prices
| Vehicle | Fee |
|---|---|
| Car with up to 5 seats | ISK 1,500 |
| Car with 6 to 9 seats | ISK 2,450 |
How to book: book and pay on parka.is, and enter the correct licence plate.
Important: Landmannalaugar is only reached by F-roads, which need an approved 4x4. A parking booking does not mean the roads are open or that your car is allowed on them. See F-roads in Iceland.
Check road conditions on umferdin.is before you set off.
Other attractions and sightseeing stops
Many popular stops, such as Seljalandsfoss, Reynisfjara and Jökulsárlón, now charge for parking. Most use cameras that record your licence plate on arrival, even where there is no barrier or ticket.
How to pay
- Read the sign when you arrive: it names the payment provider and the deadline.
- Pay at the machine, by QR code, or in the app named on the sign. Parka is used at many sites, but not all.
- A tour or activity ticket does not automatically include parking.

Missed payments
If a toll or parking fee is missed
The charge is sent to Reykjavik Rent a Car and charged to your payment card under our rental terms: the original charge, any operator late fee and our service fee. It can arrive weeks after you return the car.
Think a charge is wrong?
Keep your receipt and contact the operator. If the charge came through us, email info@reykjavikrentacar.is with your booking number, licence plate, date and proof of payment, and we will look into it.
Before you return the car
Check that every tunnel trip and bridge crossing is paid, end any active parking sessions, remove the plate from parking apps and automatic payment accounts, and save your receipts. Your fuel discount key works at selected Olís and ÓB stations, so fill up before you return.
Road tolls and parking FAQ
Are road tolls included in my rental?
No. Tunnel and bridge tolls are paid separately to the operator. The road tax in your booking does not cover them.
Which number do I use to pay?
The licence plate number of the car you are driving. If you get a replacement car during your rental, pay with the new car's plate.
Do I pay again on the way back?
Yes. Each trip through the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel and each crossing of the Hornafjarðarfljót bridge is charged separately.
Is the Hvalfjörður tunnel a toll road?
No. The Hvalfjörður tunnel north of Reykjavík has been free since 2018.
Can I pay all tolls and parking with one app?
No. Pay the tunnel toll on veggjald.is and the bridge toll on spolur.is. For parking, use the machine, app or website named at each location.
What happens if I forget to pay?
The charge is sent to Reykjavik Rent a Car and charged to your payment card with a service fee, plus any late fee from the operator. Paying within the deadline avoids this.
Can charges arrive after I have returned the car?
Yes. Operators can send invoices weeks later, and they are charged under your rental agreement.
